Franken-servers

We here at lopoco think of ourselves as server innovators. We design our products to make customers happy. But there are several startup server vendors out there, oh you know who you are, that design their servers to make their investors happy. They have a lot of custom chips that are expensive to create and hard to re-create, and/or maybe they are using so-called “cell phone processors” because maybe that will use less power. And they always have a strange form factor not consistent with current server products. They have architectures that don't run a lot of common server software, because that software doesn't fare well on 32-bit processors with very limited addressing ranges. Not to mention that the software hasn't been ported to that processor family. Or they are large, expensive mainframes that no Web 2.0 style data center can use. And the truth is, none of them are really all that efficient compared lopoco servers, which have none of their draw backs. So we have started to call these strange servers that no one really knows how to use “Franken-servers” because, well, the name just fits.
