The other cluster upgrade went fine, so I don't think it's reproducible
all the time.

I experienced the reboot myself when I first started.  But when I added
the nice to the tar process, they went away.  I haven't tested it
myself in a clustered environment, so some experimentation needs to be
done to see if that is the difference, or I've just been lucky, or
there is a memory component to it....
