5.3.3: Both Sandrine and Tim raised issues with this, and as Tim
pointed out it will be a support issue. I agree. Aren't customers
supposed to configure BOTH SC1 and SC2? Why would I, as a customer,
expect to set anything other than an IP address and netmask for a
SECONDARY port? As such, I'd expect the additional config info I
provided with SC1 to take priority. Can we get support to weigh in on
this?

=20

5.4: How was this resolved? Tim pointed out that "ifconfig down" and
"ifconfig up" should take care of the BSD networking issues. Regarding
pm, you can change pmtab while pm is running (it only reads it when it
starts), and then kill it and start a new one, which will read the new
pmtab. If this works for initial config, shouldn't it also work for
"system config restore"? Since you're trying to share the code, why
wouldn't you make both work the same?

=20

6.3: Initial config screen: Maybe I'm confused, but why are there
default values here? The default that initial config uses in the
default IP address section is not necessarily related to how the user
wants to configure the ports. It's easy to hit return and end up with
those "default" values, when in fact you really don't want anything
configured. Since this information subsequently goes into cluster.conf
and it is such a pain in the neck to change any of these fields after
clustering is running, we're asking for trouble to provide any defaults
for these fields. (If the customer gets it wrong, "system config reset"
is required to change most of these fields. And, before anyone asks,
there are already half a dozen ECRs and/or defects asking to change
this.)

=20

6.4: Unless I'm missing something this example only shows how to
configure SC1. It would be helpful to have an example that configures
both SC1 and SC2, since that's what customers should be doing.

=20

The requirement for the Initial Configuration feature is to support the
current behavior of OCT (ONStor Configuration Tool) option to "Restore
from secondary flash". Anything that changes the current behavior of
this item should be considered beyond the scope of this task.

=20

The same is true for supporting the current behavior after changes are
committed using the OCT. We do not want to reboot the NG after changes
are committed.

I don't know the answer to this question. This is something that should
probably be discussed in a design review meeting

so that we can consider all the implications.

=20

Tim,

=20

"system config restore" currently ends up rebooting the system. As the
"Restore from secondary flash" option in FTI re-uses the "system config
restore" code, this would reboot the system too. Should we modify
"system config restore" to not reboot the NG as well?

=20

We plan to work on the implementation as per your comments i.e., not to
reboot the NG when the initial configuration questions are answered. The
same is updated in the attached FS also. During the time that the agile
daemon's restart, the system would show the "start_twiddle".

=20

It may be noted that when this is done from the WebUI, the current
session would terminate as the sscccc daemon would also need to restart.

=20

Regards,

Sripal.

=20

It would be worth spending some time investigating the possibility of
eliminating the reboot after

changing the configuration. You should be able to shutdown pm, change
the pmtab, ifconfig down then

ifconfig up the network interface. Minimizing config time is important
so elimination of the reboot

would be huge.

Here are some feedback and questions:

=20

=20

=20

5.1.2 about configuration parameters: what about date, time and zone? Do

we leave that for later since we have the NTP server? But NTP is UTC (I

think) so we could need the zone.

=20

> Thanks for pointing this. We will add it to the initial configuration
parameters list.

=20

5.3 point 3) why would we override the parameters when using SC2?

=20

>When either the sc1 or the sc2 interface has entries in dhcp server,
parameters obtained using=20

that particular interface would be taken. The conflict occurs only when
there is dhcp entry=20

for both the interface. Since sc2 contacts dhcp server after sc1, we
assume the configuration=20

obtained from sc2 is the latest.

=20

5.3 point 4) will the separate script to specify the default

configuration method be available for testing? Where would it run from?

=20

>I need to clarify with Charissa. Will get back to you on this later

=20

5.3 point 5) with system config reset -r, the only files we delete are

cluster.conf and cluster.db.DB0?

=20

>Other than cluster db, we also delete

1. /usr/local/agile/conf/smbd*

2. /usr/local/agile/conf/krb5*

3. /usr/local/agile/conf/cifs.dbase*

4. /var/agile/samba/secrets.*

5. /usr/local/agile/conf/stand_cluster

6. /usr/local/agile/etc/elog.conf

7. /usr/local/agile/etc/snmpd.conf

8. Reset /etc/passwd

=20

When -r is specified, we do not reset the below files

1. /etc/mygate

2. /etc/myname

3. /etc/hostname.sc1

4. /etc/hostname.sc2

5. /etc/hosts

6. /etc/resolv.conf

7. /etc/ntp.conf

=20

=20

6.1 -r retains the configuration parameters: we mention only the SC1 and

SC2 ip. What about default route, timezone, ntp, dns (hosts and
server)...?

=20

> All the above parameters would be retained. We will add it explicitly
in FS

=20

6.3 example: should not login as root.

=20

>Any user can configure the initial config parameters, if they run nfxsh
and the

 filer is not initialized

=20

Missing DNS for Domain Name and Nameserver

Gateway's Domain Name =3D testsc2
Gateway's NameServer =3D 10.2.0.7

These parameters are configured in the example. Do you mean something
else?

=20

Why do we have to restart at the end instead of continue booting like

the OCT?

=20

> Before initial config is configured, /onstor/etc/pmtab file will have=20

minimal daemon entries say sscccc and elog. Only after initialization,
we=20

update the pmtab file all the daemons. In OCT, the network parameters
are=20

configured to the files, before network daemons are started. But in new
method,

TCP stack is already built up; hence we decided to restart the filer.

=20

8.2 flash installation: remove cw_install.sh in point 1 since it copies

the config.

=20

> Ok. Accepted

=20

8.3 is this just for internal use only? Do we have to test that?

=20

> Charissa, can you help me out on this.

=20

9.2 we'll need an example of the DHCP entries for all the parameters

=20

>We will add it in the FS

=20

9.2 is dns domain name missing from the list? And the zone?

>Yes. We will add it

Please review the attached updated Initial Configuration FS for R98.

This document now contains just the DHCP client and Default IP address

approaches to be used by this feature. It also contains more detailed

information on these approaches in addition to sample console output.
