I believe that it is something that should be committed to sooner than
later. In NYC, any customer that is using NAS knows NetApp. NetApp
strongly urges their customers to not use mixed mode. If we want to get
in to those clients, we should have a solution that "works" according to
what the customers have been trained to know as a basic fundamental
configuration.

We should not discuss implementation details of something that we
haven't even committed to delivering yet. But this doesn't mean we
won't deliver it either.

When we implement, it will be at the volume level and not qtree (AFAIK).

=20

Doug,

=20

a while ago, I had a similar request from a customer. I was told, that
we are about to develop something that is equal to the "security style"
introduced by NTAP (QUALCOM was asking for that).=20

If a NTAP qtree is set to security style UNIX for instance, both
clients, UNIX and Windows can read and modify the files (as long as they
have permissions), but the security meta data will always be UNIX, and
only UNIX clients can change it. The opposite is true vis-versa.=20

The way we implemented our multiprotocol feature is similar to the NTAP
security style "mixed" (which by the way every NTAP SE recommends not to
use).

I havn't heard anything specific about our plans since.

=20

Hey All,

=20

This thread was originally to dl-se but I've added dl-cstech. For those
that missed the original, start from the bottom.

=20

Ben P. found in one of our slides about ID Mapping a reference to
supported wildcards. The NCM help even says that wildcards are
supported which means my customer can probably do the following in order
to maintain his permissions and ownerships:

=20

DOMAIN\* =3D=3D user1@nisdomain

=20

This brings about a follow-on question. What is the scope of our ID
Mapping? Cluster level? Virtual server level? If the customer created
the above map, which may work for one particular set of circumstances,
will that map break an environment of a single home directory for UNIX
and Windows? If so, this means the ID Mapping is at the scope of the
cluster.

IHAPC using NAS today in a multi-protocol environment. They have a UNIX
process that writes via NFS files and directories. These files must
always be owned by a single UID/GID. From the Windows side the customer
has multiple users reading, and sometimes writing/modifying these files.
If a Windows user writes to the file, the ownership changes and breaks
the UNIX process.

=20

Besides the obvious of creating multiple entries in the ID Mapping table
(windows1<=3D>unix1; windows2<=3D>unix1; windows3<=3D>unix1), is there a
better way of mapping multiple users to a single UNIX user? I thought
of the all_squash option, but that only works for NFS mounts.
