Brian,

As you know, the development Tim describes in his message supports the
decisions the Delorean team made a week ago. This week, with Sandeep in
attendance for SE and Joe for Operations, the essential change in the
decision was to retain the option for SEs to install eval units using
precreated Delorean flash cards at a rate of perhaps a dozen or two per
quarter. This has no effect on our development work, does not affect
Customer Support, and received Joe's and Sandeep's endorsement as well
as Raghu's.

Unfortunately, the discussion in the Delorean team meeting did not end
with the decision, and conversation persisted without much focus for
quite some time while Jerry was out of the room. When he returned, he
had not heard our decision process and discussion, but he did hear parts
of the unfocused discussion that followed, and it appeared to be
ignoring the basic realities of what customers require. He necessarily
directed us to come up with options that are consistent with obvious
customer and field needs.

Our technical options in Development are limited. Even if there is some
technical approach that is a clear improvement on the Delorean team's
decision (including Sandeep and Joe), the new approach could not be
included in the present project schedule. My guess is that the slip from
a May 18 FCS date would be at least two weeks, and possibly more, and it
would add risks of its own to the product. In any case, I'm not
optimistic that a clear technical improvement exists.

Since I believe that Jerry's direction came about because of the
particular subset of the conversation he heard, and I believe he would
endorse the actual team decision if it were effectively presented to
him, I've asked our Development organization to continue on the path
we've been following. We'll need to find a way, perhaps through you as
Delorean development leader, or through some other communication and
decision mechanisms, to get this sorted out so that all understand the
proposals and constraints and decie accordingly.

jay
