There have been previous discussions about instrumenting our code to
detect memory leaks.

Andy had recommended 'mpatrol'.   It looks like this supports FreeBSD
and provides wrappers for all of the primary C library API's, including
those used by Samba (likely the initial guinea pig).

If there has been any previous work archived somewhere that we should
consider resurrecting, please let me know.   Also, if you have any other
favorite tools you recommend, please let me know.
