Based on feedback from Sudheesh, Huy and Bill I suggest we keep the
default IP address. I will consolidate the installation scenarios
obtained from these guys and update the FS. Please send any comments you
have on this topic.=20

I'll have to agree with Sudheesh, I can see nothing but problems with
DHCP. Default IP would be easy and you are using it now with both the
arrays we support(one array uses DHCP or default IP). Typical install
the customer does not have his network cables run and I configure the
filers while he runs around getting things wired up. 9 out of 10 times I
upgrade the filers by directly connecting my pc to SC1.

=20

I have never asked a customer if there was DHCP available nor has a
customer asked if we use DHCP.

=20

"This requires that the customer manually enter an IP address and the
filer's MAC address in the DHCP server". This part concerns me, most of
my installs the storage admin has some IP's written down on a napkin and
has no control at all over the DHCP server.

=20

Just my 2 cents...either way we'll figure it out.

Guys,

=20

1.) Cases 2 and 3 in Sudheesh email below present scenarios where we
have a crossover Ethernet cable directly connected to an sc1 or sc2
port. Is this true?=20

2.) Would we also have installations where we are connected to a network
that would also be connected to a DHCP server?=20

3.) If so, is this the majority of cases? If not, would having a DHCP
client make this scenario more likely?

=20

Thanks,

Charissa

I don't think we you are addressing my concerns 2 and 3. My question is
why don't we want to do default IP? I am at loss here and don't like the
DHCP option.=20

Sudheesh,

=20

We will rely on manual allocation for the DHCP server. This requires
that the customer manually enter an IP address and the filer's MAC
address in the DHCP server. During the boot process, the dhclient
running on the filer will send a DHCPDISCOVER request to obtain its IP
address, etc. Therefore, the customer will already know the IP address.
This is the same thing NetApp does.

I am in favor of default IP over DHCP for the following reasons

=20

1. We don't have an LCD display to find out the IP like other
devices do

=20

2. Most of the time, until the initial configuration is done, we
will not be part of a network. Sometimes ,we configure the system in one
network which may just have a cross connected laptop

=20

3. A number of times, we don't have access to network on the day
one, but have the storage ready to go. We would like to have the system
come up and read to test storage connection and not have to use serial
cables for config

=20

Please let me know what were the reasons for opting DHCP over this

Subject: Initial Configuration Setup

=20

Guys,

=20

We decided that we will use the DHCP Client approach for initial
configuration. We also decided not to use a default IP address at all.
The fallback for the DHCP Client approach will be running rc.initial the
way we do now using a serial cable.=20

=20

Jonathan asked me to get information on the Ethernet cable setup for
initial configuration. For example, would the cable be directly
connected to one of the SC ports, connected to a hub or a switch? Do you
connect the filers in a cluster and then configure them? Can you guys
let me know what a typical customer setup would be for a single node and
a HA setup?=20

=20

Are there any other requirements that need to be added to this document?

=20

Thanks,

Charissa
