Will using 0.0.0.0 address Sudheesh's concerns, or do we still need to
support a default IP address?

I don't think we you are addressing my concerns 2 and 3. My question is
why don't we want to do default IP? I am at loss here and don't like the
DHCP option.=20

Sudheesh,

=20

We will rely on manual allocation for the DHCP server. This requires
that the customer manually enter an IP address and the filer's MAC
address in the DHCP server. During the boot process, the dhclient
running on the filer will send a DHCPDISCOVER request to obtain its IP
address, etc. Therefore, the customer will already know the IP address.
This is the same thing NetApp does.

I am in favor of default IP over DHCP for the following reasons

=20

1. We don't have an LCD display to find out the IP like other
devices do

2. Most of the time, until the initial configuration is done, we
will not be part of a network. Sometimes ,we configure the system in one
network which may just have a cross connected laptop

3. A number of times, we don't have access to network on the day
one, but have the storage ready to go. We would like to have the system
come up and read to test storage connection and not have to use serial
cables for config

=20

Please let me know what were the reasons for opting DHCP over this

Sudheesh,

=20

Jonathan thinks we need to ship an Ethernet cable with the box to
support initial configuration using the DHCP client approach. However,
when we use this approach a customer may use the same cable used to
connect the mgmt port to the network. Also, if an SE is doing the
installation, they would normally carry this cable with them. If we do
need a cable to ship with the box, I will need to start the process
rolling. Please let me know your thoughts on this.

=20

Thanks,

Charissa

=20

Guys,

=20

We decided that we will use the DHCP Client approach for initial
configuration. We also decided not to use a default IP address at all.
The fallback for the DHCP Client approach will be running rc.initial the
way we do now using a serial cable.=20

=20

Jonathan asked me to get information on the Ethernet cable setup for
initial configuration. For example, would the cable be directly
connected to one of the SC ports, connected to a hub or a switch? Do you
connect the filers in a cluster and then configure them? Can you guys
let me know what a typical customer setup would be for a single node and
a HA setup?=20

=20

Are there any other requirements that need to be added to this document?

=20

Thanks,

Charissa
