Rich,
I assume this is NFS access. If so it could be a stale NFS file handle
on the linux system you are accessing. Have you tried another system,
compile or compile2?

The last time mightydog was down I couldn't see my home directory (as
expected.)  But now that it's back up, I still don't seem to have one.
Is this a known issue?
