These have both been noted before by John Klokkenga and Shawn Currin in
various emails, but I wanted to re-summarize them for the field because
I keep hearing questions.

1. Pantera upgrade procedure

The latest Pantera firmware is J101P01, available at:

ftp://ftp.onstor.com/outbound/software/DotHill/Releases/neptunesw_P1.0-1
01P01-02-BB.zip

The technical bulletin and associated upgrade instructions are at:

ftp://ftp.onstor.com/outbound/software/DotHill/Documentation/TechBulleti
n-2006-11-06.pdf

Note that this release CANNOT be hot-upgraded. Please be sure customers
offline all volumes served by Pantera storage using "vol offline" or
"vsvr disable" (either one works) before performing the upgrade.

This firmware release fixes various nasty bugs as well as adding support
for 3+ shelf configurations.

2. Pantera controller swap procedure

I believe there is a forthcoming FRU document which TechPubs is working
on for this. For now, please be aware that a Pantera controller being
replaced or installed into an empty slot should have its FibreChannel
cables connected BEFORE insertion. This is because, if the new
controller is at a higher firmware level than the partner, it will
offline the partner while it does the upgrade. If this occurs, the new
controller serves all the Pantera volumes, and it obviously has to have
a path to the SAN to continue data service to the host (the NAS
gateway).

Because this is a procedure we have relatively little experience with in
the field, it's of course most prudent to take a hard outage for it. If
your customer refuses, however, make sure you do the operation as
described above.

If you have any questions, let us know.
