Try this one out with your tests.  I noticed one thing that screws up
when mounted NFS root, like we all are.  If you type

ifconfig eth1 10.2.x.y

and don't specify a netmask of 255.255.255.0 or higher, the system will
lock up because the ifconfig will give the route for
10.2.x.x/255.255.0.0 to eth1, and your root filesystem will be
inaccessible, boom, you're dead.

But I was able to set and unset an IP address without the system
getting freaked out.
