     there could be huge glaring bugs in this code, and i wouldn't know.
     but i looked through it and nothing jumped out, not that it would.
     perhaps Ron might be able to do a better job for you?  i noticed
     one or two things that seemed like improvements over the way it
     used to be done.  i think.
