Well, we would have to, if this bit thing is right, because otherwise
the kernel is just going to clear it.

I've hacked the driver to set the bit when setting gigabit speed - it
doesn't seem to fix the problem.  I still can't ping between sc0 and
sc1. I don't have a cluster at the moment to try it.

Here is that word after the driver has initialized everything:

mac_cfg1 = 0x8000c400020146    100TX

Then I connect the two ports together, and I get this:

mac_cfg1 = 0x8000d800020166

but I can't ping.
