Yes, I actually paid retail $8 for a two serial port USB adapter, I
think the maker is called USBGEAR or something.  Taiwan for sure. It has
no markings on it. The chip is FTDI which has released their drivers to
the community so they are supported by just about any distro kernel.
There are multiple vendors that have done so.

I found several 1-port jobs for 2-3 dollars.
