John,  I put this into the bug, but I'm not sure if you saw it so I'm
sending it to you as a separate email:

Here is a new procedure I'd like to request be tried:

1. disable exim:
# rm /usr/lib/exim4/exim4
2. reboot
(autosupport emails won't work, but who cares)

check to see if you get the messages.

After determining if you do or don't get the messages, you may re-enable exim and start it:

# ln  -s  /usr/sbin/exim4  /usr/lib/exim4
# /etc/init.d/exim4  start

no reboot necessary.
