Makefile

     looks ok, but....

     we're just going to keep finding !@%!$^ like this.  do we really
     want to go to all the trouble of making a modern environment build
     the lame duck software?  while also making it backwards compatible?
     wouldn't just doing a chroot be easier?  i'm just saying.
