Because I have to be in the directory in question to see the file with
perforce then. For example, from any arbitrary directory on my
workstation, the command

P4C_SPEC=maximk-5
BRANCH=FB-DELOREAN
F=nfx-tree/code/sm-except/exc-llhandler.S
p4 -c "$P4C_SPEC" print -q "//$P4C_SPEC/$BRANCH/$F"

does not work. The only way I can see that file is to figure out what
directory that branch maps to and cd to it, and then execute

p4 -c "$P4C_SPEC" print -q $F

But I don't want to have to figure out what that directory is nor cd to
it.

Same goes for any p4 command, just in case you were wondering.

That's why you shouldn't have special maps for branches. You can
always use symlink to create an easier to type branch directory thing.
