Could find nothing to blame this on.  A real weird one.  Someone
suggested a slightly different possible explanation that sounded almost
plausible, but I don't remember what it was.  I was thinking that
perhaps due to a fluke, this string was being allocated in a rw section
before because of space conservation reasons or something.  Like it
decided not to because it would have had to set aside a whole new chunk
just for this string.  No idea in the end.  Frustrating attempts to
track it down mostly because our ancient compiler should have complained
if it was going to do that, but of course it doesn't.

New compiler for Linux/Cougar does complain under the same
circumstances.  At least the future looks brighter.
