Hi Warren,

LSI PO # 4510292147
R905 server delivered at the very, very, end of last year.

I wanted to get the Dell order number for this system so that I could
do this stuff on line and not bother you. If you can just send me that
number, I can do that. Otherwise, here's the skinny:

(long version)

(1) Memory speed is 533MHz, not 800. A Dell update says this is to be
expected while issues are worked out. I don't recall seeing that in
the order process - naughty-naughty, we should have been informed.

I'd like to find out what sort of ETA there is on the fix. I assume it
will be either a BIOS update or a board replacement.

(2) Bios updating. There is a bios update, but I can't install it.
I'm hoping it can improve the memory speed a bit, at least to 667MHz.
The update program assumes all kinds of Redhat-ness on the system and
I can't get it to work. We use Debian here so not even RPM package
management. Seriously, you guys should have an Intel-like mechanism
where you just send me (I download) a CD image, I burn the CD, boot it,
and it updates the BIOS, end of problem.

I don't do Windows just in case that's not clear ~:^) I would be
amenable to making a FreeDOS CD if necessary, however, if that can be
used to do the update. A Linux engineer-to-engineer discussion might be
what's needed here: I'm quite open to that. Two engineers could
probably get this situation squared away in 5 minutes.

(3) Rails. You wisely ordered the system with rails even though I
unwisely didn't think they were necessary. However, the wrong rails
were sent, they don't fit. I'm not sure what the mechanism is for
getting that squared away but the online thing is probably the best for
this, no?

Thanks,

a
