Just a quick note on the ssh.  You don't need the -g for this use ~:^)

If you want to set up just a single tunnel, you can use the -N and -f
flags.  You will need your password as usual, but otherwise you will
get your local prompt after that.

If you're using connection muxing, and let's face it, who isn't these
days, and you don't want the tunnel connection to own the connection to
that remote machine, you can do like this:

ssh -M -o ControlPath=none -N -f -L 6969:localhost:6969 remotemachine

Also, the machine name or IP address in between the two colons can be
any machine/IP "visible" to remotemachine.
