> Dear Esteemed Colleagues,

Who?

Anyway, I almost forgot why I mentioned that I have my own little
home-brew backup for my workstation -- so I could offer it to other
people! People who want to take their fate into their own hands, rather
than waiting for armaggedon or something. That was a lousy movie too.

All that you need is a USB drive (I got a laptop hard drive USB
adaptor and a spare 40GB laptop disk I had laying about the house) and
you can back up your workstation. You can get the shell script from me,
and if you have to replace your workstation or it's hard drive, you can
simply boot off a Knoppix CD, which you can also get from me or the
internet, and restore your disk and you're back in business in no time.
It also is handy if you farkle up something on your local drive and wish
you had a copy of it from, oh, say, last week.

I run my backup every Friday, but it can easily be run more often. It
takes an hour or two, but it's not like I have to wait for it or stop
what I'm doing. The 40GB disk is large enough to hold 5 complete
backups (compressed, of course), as long as I don't have too many DVD
iso images or similar, large uncompressable things on my disk.

It gives me a lot of piece of mind, especially since I keep NFS root
filesystems and other things that took me a lot of time to create and
perfect, but don't necessarily modify daily, on my local hard drive.
If I goof up or my hard drive dies, at least I have a copy from last
Friday I can start with. Some people keep their source trees on the
local hard drive. It might really suck to lose that work.

If you want it, I'll give you the shell script, which can be run from
cron or by hand, and any other details you might want.

Cheers,

a
