These version numbers don't mean anything to me.  2.2.2.3? 4? 5?

In general, you have to use what is in the tree you are running from
(or upgrading to). So if there is a file /etc/flash_install.sh in the
tree that you are upgrading to, then you can use that to
install/upgrade.  flash_install_512.sh is a completely different
program and doesn't have the "upgrade" feature.  You should be able to
upgrade from 2.2.{3,4} to 3.0 using the usual two step procedure:

1. system copy init
2. system upgrade -s <ftp-R3.0>
